Costa Rica has the most varied fauna on the planet. Counting
all birds and mammals per every 10,000 square kilometers, it
has 615 species. The US, by comparison, has just 104. In Costa
Rica there are some 850 bird species, over 200 mammal species,
at least 35,000 known insect species (with many more waiting
to be discovered), about 160 species of amphibians, 200 reptiles
and 130 species of freshwater fish.
